Melvin Shelton was shot several times in the unit block of Florida Avenue NW about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, police said. He died about two hours later at Howard University Hospital. Homicide officials said Shelton was set to be a witness in a murder trial in Richmond, but they could not provide any more details. Mr. Shelton was arrested in June of last year and charged with several drug violations, according to court records. He received a three-to-nine-year suspended sentence and was put on four years' probation. Also yesterday morning, Darryl DeWitt Thompson, 24, of the 800 block of Bellevue Street SE was found shot to death in the 2500 block of Firth Sterling Avenue SE, off Interstate 295 in Anacostia, police said. S=NEW STORY District man convicted of brutal killing A District man was convicted yesterday of shooting a man 18 times as he left a building in Southeast in January. Deon Green, 18, of the 3400 block of Stanton Road SE was convicted for the first-degree murder of Carlos Carter and also for possession of a firearm during a crime of violence and carrying a pistol without a license. After a brief fight over the purchase of crack cocaine on Jan. 20 1992, Green and his nephew opened fire on Mr. Carter as he was leaving a builing at Trenton Place SE. The murder was witnessed by several bystanders and the two were caught 11 days later. Green faces a maximum sentence of 20 years to life for the murder conviction.
