Matthews, an area resident for almost 60 years, died of arteriosclerosis Nov. 21 at Carriage Hill Nursing Center in Silver Spring. She was 99. Mrs. Matthews was born in Akron, Ohio, in 1893 and grew up there. She married James A. Matthews in 1916. They moved to the Washington area in 1934, and Mr. Matthews became the area's first distributor of the soft drink 7-Up. Mrs. Matthews was an active volunteer for many years at Carroll Manor Nursing Home in Hyattsville. She was also very active in her church, St. Bartholomew's Roman Catholic Church in Bethesda. Her husband died in 1969. Survivors include three sons, James J. Matthews of Arlington, John L. Matthews of Glen Echo and Thomas E. Matthews of Levels, W.Va.; one daughter, Sister Joan Matthews of the Sisters of Providence, St. Mary of the Woods, Ind.; 12 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. A prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow at DeVol Funeral Home on Wisconsin Avenue. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Bartholomew's, with burial following at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Silver Spring. This article is copyright 1992 The Washington Times.
