The woman, who has six years with the department, had a history of "foul language" and has had several complaints about her conduct, including incidents in which she touched the genitals of male deputies. She has been on administrative leave for several weeks. Her dismissal is effective at the end of the month, Sheriff Peed said. "It's not the first time a female has been disciplined, but it's the first time a female has been disciplined for this," Sheriff Peed said yesterday. He would not release the woman's name, citing the "sensitivity" of the charges and saying he wanted to protect her identity. The woman has the right to appeal the dismissal, he said. A second deputy, a man with several years in the department, also could be disciplined for his conduct after he and the female deputy admitted to a liaison while on duty at the Fairfax County jail several years ago. The two were accused of "groping" each other and similar misconduct, which came to light as a result of the sexual harassment investigation, Sheriff Peed said. "The other deputy is being considered for disciplinary action as a result of her relationship with him," the sheriff said. The female deputy was under investigation for about six months after witnesses saw her grabbing at least two male deputies in the groin area. The two male deputies did not report the incidents but upon questioning confirmed they had occurred. Since the complaints, Sheriff Peed has required his employees to attend workshops on recognizing and avoiding sexual harassment. This article is copyright 1992 The Washington Times.
