The youth is a student at Langston Hughes Intermediate School, near South Lakes. Police said the knife was discovered in the student's backpack by school officials after a confrontation involving several students. Police said the youth was released to his parents pending charges of carrying a concealed weapon. S=NEW STORY Riverboat gambling called fiscal boon Riverboat gambling would bolster tourism, promote waterfront development, create jobs and pump money into state and local government coffers, a legislative panel was told Wednesday. Proponents of legislation to allow floating casinos in Virginia dominated a public hearing by a House General Laws subcommittee appointed to study the issue. Only two persons spoke against the proposal. The panel decided that before making a recommendation to the full committee, it will ask the state police to investigate whether riverboat gambling has caused law enforcement problems in other states. S=NEW STORY Officer ruled justified in shoe-shine incident A state examiner has ruled a black Fairfax County police officer was justified in quitting the department after his white supervisor asked him to shine the supervisor's shoes. Virginia Employment Commission appeals examiner A.C. Leigh wrote in the decision that the working conditions for Warren F. Jackson were "just too oppressive" and that his reasons for resigning were "compelling." Mr. Jackson testified that discriminatory treatment of minorities and the department's police officers had been allowed to continue for a long time.
