If it is successful, the works could end up hanging alongside those of the most famous painters of the Italian Renaissance, including Botticelli, Raphael and Michelangelo. Mayor Giorgio Morales said the Culture Ministry in Rome issued an injunction to stop 20 watercolors by Hitler, who aspired to be an artist in his youth, from being exported when they are auctioned later this week. This gives the Italian state 60 days in which to buy the watercolors, described by Mr. Morales as "little more than postcards by an amateur artist." The 20 pictures are to be auctioned Friday in the northeastern city of Trieste. "There is no doubt that even though they are of absolutely no artistic value . . . these works are of huge historic interest," Mr. Morales said at a news conference in Florence. "We cannot accept that this collection of watercolors be broken up and bought by a neo-Nazi group, which is the worst hypothesis, or an American millionaire."
