About 75 people raced from apartments in the upscale Brentwood section, and all apparently evacuated safely, authorities said. More than 100 firefighters battled the blaze and were able to extinguish it in about two hours. The wooden frame of the three-story, partially constructed building was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. About 12 units in a four-story apartment complex next door were consumed as the fire intensified and flames shot skyward more than 100 feet. Deputy Fire Chief Don Anthony said damage would surpass $1 million. Fire also damaged a four-story building to the west of the blaze, and a wood roof of another building caught fire. The cause of the fire was under investigation. S=NEW STORY Students demonstrate for right to join union BERKELEY, Calif. - Hundreds of graduate student instructors at the University of California, Berkeley, demonstrated yesterday for the right to join a union. "Hey, hey. Ho, ho. Union-busting has got to go," they chanted as they circled main entrances. Graduate students say they're not striking for higher pay, about $1,000 a month, but want the right to join a union so their health benefits and pay will be protected. But administrators say only school officials have the authority to recognize AGSE as a union. The university said it would bargain only with employees recognized as regular state workers. The California Supreme Court ruled last summer that graduate students don't fall into that category. S=NEW STORY Psychologists shot outside mental hospital SPARKS, Nev. - National Guardsmen patrolled the grounds of the Nevada Mental Health Institute yesterday after two psychologists were ambushed as they walked to their offices. Ingrid Moore and Rhianon Retfalvy were shot and seriously wounded early Wednesday. Police yesterday searched for the gunman. Dr. Retfalvy gave detectives a description but did not know the man, police said. "We deal with thousands of mentally disturbed people a year," hospital chief of staff John Marino said. "The chance of one of them being a suspect is real." Gov. Bob Miller posted the National Guard sentries. The institute, spread over 60 acres, has no security of its own.
