Mr. Wright and Lavet Epps had been missing since Nov. 10, when he dropped their 2 1/2-year-old daughter, Jamye, with a baby sitter and never returned. Prince George's County police found Miss Epps' body about 11 p.m. Thursday in the trunk of Mr. Wright's black 1991 Nissan Maxima, which was in the parking lot of a Seat Pleasant town house development. She had been shot once in the head. Mr. Wright was spotted shortly before 4 p.m. yesterday as he left a Narcotics Anonymous meeting at the Path Finders Club in the 1100 block of H Street NE. A passer-by who recognized him went into a barbershop where an off-duty Metropolitan Police officer was getting a haircut and told the officer "Jammin' Jimmy" was outside. The officer called homicide detectives and left the shop to follow Mr. Wright. Mr. Wright turned and looked the officer in the eye, then turned into a trash-filled alley in the 1200 block of H Street NE. He drew a .22-caliber handgun, placed it to his left temple and fired one shot. Homicide detectives arrived minutes later, and Mr. Wright was taken to D.C. General Hospital, where he was conscious and stable but refusing to cooperate with investigators last night. He was charged with carrying a dangerous weapon without a license, police said. Prince George's County and D.C. homicide officials said they do not know where Miss Epps was killed, but they consider Mr. Wright their top suspect. Mr. Wright, 36, a promotions assistant with WPGC-FM, was apparently distraught over a broken relationship with Miss Epps, 27. When her body was found in the 6400 block of Greig Street, less than a mile from the District line, Miss Epps was wearing the tan leather jacket and tan pants she had on when she was last seen. WPGC employees said they were disturbed by the suspicion surrounding Mr. Wright in the slaying. * Margaret Rankin and Jim Keary contributed to this report.
