President Frederik de Klerk expressed shock at the killings and appealed to Inkatha leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi and ANC head Nelson Mandela to hold urgent peace talks. On Friday night, at least six ANC supporters died in Folweni township, south of Durban, at the hands of unidentified attackers. Saturday, gunmen raided two huts in nearby Mpushini, where villagers were celebrating the graduation of a 19-year-old sangoma, or witch doctor. Police said 20 persons were killed, but Inkatha put the death toll at 24. Inkatha national Chairman Frank Mdlalose, visiting Mpushini, was asked yesterday if he had any doubt that the ANC's armed wing, Umkhonto we Sizwe (Spear of the Nation), was responsible. "No," he replied. He said the victims were not necessarily Inkatha supporters but were killed because the ANC opposed traditional Zulu customs such as the graduation ceremony. Survivors of the attack told reporters that those at the ceremony, some of whom came from distant villages, were not affiliated with a political group. "We don't belong to any organization.
