KOIN-TV of Portland said it won't switch to network coverage on Nov. 3 until 7:30 p.m., half an hour before polls close. Jim Putney, general manager of KVAL-TV in Eugene, Ore., said his station also won't pick up the network coverage until 7:30 p.m. And CBS affiliate KXTV in Sacramento, Calif., said it would hold off broadcasting the projections until 8 p.m. "I hope the whole West Coast does it," said News Director Jan Allen. S=NEW STORY Bomb found in school; Gore cancels speech FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Democratic vice presidential nominee Al Gore canceled an appearance at a high school here last night after an explosive device was discovered in the school's gymnasium, a Secret Service spokesman said. Police in Fort Collins, about 70 miles north of Denver, reported a suspicious device under the bleachers at Rocky Mountain High School just before 6 p.m. EST, said Secret Service spokesman Carl Meyer. S=NEW STORY U.S. said to help Iraqis build weapon A senior House Democrat said yesterday that the Bush administration helped the Iraqis build a nuclear "supergun" by approving export licenses in 1989 for related technology. The licenses were approved despite State Department knowledge that the U.S. company receiving them was engaged in numerous military projects in Iraq, Rep. Henry B. Gonzalez, Texas Democrat, told a Senate hearing. Also, formerly secret U.S. military reports - prepared by Army intelligence officers before the Persian Gulf war - show that Iraq's arsenal contained American land mines and mortars during the war. The reports don't say how the Iraqis obtained the weapons. S=NEW STORY Court upholds ruling against reporters RICHMOND - A federal appeals court yesterday upheld contempt-of-court findings against four South Carolina reporters who refused to testify in a state senator's bribery trial. A three-judge panel of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said that "absent evidence of governmental harassment or bad faith," the reporters have no privilege different from other citizens to avoid testifying at a criminal trial. You have to understand the bureaucracy, you have to understand the Congress." S=NEW STORY Families of 4 MIAs notified of deaths The families of four Americans listed as missing in the Vietnam War have been notified that photographs turned over to U.S. officials by Vietnam appear to show their loved ones are dead, a senior U.S. official said yesterday. Defense Department spokesman Pete Williams said defense analysts are still trying to identify four other Americans the pictures show are dead and five American prisoners shown alive in the photographs taken during the war. They are among 2,265 Americans still listed as missing in Southeast Asia from the war. S=NEW STORY Students protest Clinton endorsement Several dozen American University students yesterday protested AU President Joseph Duffey's decision to join more than 200 college presidents and deans in endorsing Democrat Bill Clinton for president. "The student body was never told that we were endorsing a presidential candidate. It was a premature, judgmental decision," said protester Chad Hankin. S=NEW STORY CDC adds new diseases to AIDS definition ATLANTA - Federal health officials yesterday added three more diseases to a proposed new definition of AIDS, bowing to demands from activists who had accused the government of ignoring symptoms peculiar to women. The revised definition, expected to be enacted next year, could affect disability and other benefits for thousands of people infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. The Centers for Disease Control proposed adding pulmonary tuberculosis, recurrent pneumonia and invasive cervical cancer to the list of diseases that indicate AIDS has fully developed in people infected with HIV, the AIDS virus. S=NEW STORY Bush signs bill releasing JFK data PADUCAH, Ky. - A bill to release most of the records compiled by federal investigators who probed the assassination of President John F. Kennedy was signed into law yesterday by President Bush. "Because of legitimate historical interest in this tragic event, all documents about the assassination should now be disclosed except where the strongest possible reasons counsel otherwise," Mr. Bush said.
