Dr. Mark Horowitz, a resident in training from East Tennessee University, was suspended with pay from the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Mountain Home after nurses reported the Oct. 20 outing, said Carl Gerber, director of the center. The patient, Jimmy Hughes, 67, has had two strokes and cannot care for himself, according to his wife, Marie. He is taking several prescription drugs that should not be combined with alcohol, and he was drunk when he returned to the hospital, she said. Dr. Louis Cancellaro, chief of staff at the VA hospital, said the outing had no effect on Mr. Hughes' condition. The school is investigating the incident and is expected to report to the dean, Dr. Paul Stanton, by the end of the week. S=NEW STORY Black leaders applaud fraternity suspension ATHENS, Ga. - The University of Georgia has suspended a fraternity from participating in campus social events for using a racial slur against blacks. Pi Kappa Phi fraternity was suspended for at least a year for including the slur in a pamphlet distributed to new members, the university announced Monday. The slur was included on a page listing actions the fraternity considered inappropriate. Pi Kappa Phi chief executive officer Durward Owen declined to comment, saying he did not have enough information about the decision. The decision can be appealed to a university panel. Fraternity President James H. Ackerman III had contended the slur was a joke placed in a draft of the pamphlet by a fraternity member who meant to remove it before the document was published. The pamphlet's author has resigned from the fraternity. More than 1,000 students signed a petition, initiated by the university's chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, demanding that the fraternity be suspended. S=NEW STORY Janitors throw out exhibit's cigarette butts FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - A museum exhibit director was right to think 14,000 cigarette butts would show how disgusting smoking is: They were so disgusting, the cleaning crew threw them out. "They didn't smell very good, I have to admit," said Tom Gille, who had gathered the butts for the exhibit at the new Museum of Discovery and Science in Fort Lauderdale. "But I was very disappointed." The butts were crammed into two coffee cans to illustrate the exhibit, which opens Nov. 21. A cleaning crew dumped them into a trash can and whisked them away. Now Mr. Gille is trying to gather 14,000 butts - the amount of cigarettes a typical smoker discards in a lifetime - before the museum opens. He is asking for help. "We just hope we don't get truckloads full of cigarette butts," he said Monday. This article is copyright 1992 The Washington Times.
