The shooting Monday night illustrated the growing problem of violence against tourists in the Miami area. Police last year formed a task force to protect visitors, who are often identified by their rental cars. "To the bad guys, they're good victims," police spokesman Angelo Bitsis said. Renate Morlock, a 42-year-old whose hometown was not immediately known, was listed in critical condition Tuesday. She, her husband and two others were getting into their rental car outside a McDonald's when two men approached and grabbed her purse, police said. No arrests were made. S=NEW STORY Bodies stir fears of serial killer KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Police are looking for signs of a serial killer after the discovery of the bodies of four women in a secluded area outside the city. Only two of the women have been identified, and tests to determine the causes of death were pending. But the first victim, found more than a week ago, had a history of prostitution, and investigators suggested that might provide a connection with the others. The skeletal remains of a white woman, 25 to 30 years old, were found Tuesday. Two bodies were found Monday in the same area in eastern Knox County. Police continued to search the area. "If these two girls are prostitutes, then there's no doubt there's a serial killer out there," Knoxville police investigator Tommy Stiles said. S=NEW STORY Teacher abducted outside school ORANGEBURG, S.C. - A 26-year-old teacher was abducted at gunpoint outside the high school where she works, shot five times and left for dead, authorities said. Despite her injuries, Ann Campbell managed to get help by walking to a nearby house. She was listed in fair condition yesterday in Medical University Hospital in Charleston. Miss Campbell was leaving Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School on Tuesday afternoon when an unidentified man got into the passenger side of her car, brandished a handgun and forced her to drive away, Orangeburg County Sheriff C.R. Smith Jr. said. They drove around for 15 to 20 minutes, then the gunman got out and tried to force her into the woods, the sheriff said. When she resisted, he shot her five times: once in the hand and four times in the face and neck. S=NEW STORY Ex-officials to pay fines for segregating inmates BATON ROUGE, La. - Two former corrections officials must pay $2,000 each for segregating inmates by race, a federal judge said. In his ruling Tuesday, a U.S. District judge lowered the fines from $5,000 each, the recommendation of a federal magistrate. Fined were former Department of Public Safety and Corrections Secretary C. Paul Phelps and former Angola prison Warden Frank Blackburn. U.S. Magistrate Judge Stephen Riedlinger had said Angola inmates were systematically segregated in two-man cells for the ostensible reason that mixing races would cause fights. He wrote the recommendation after hearing a case brought by three Angola prisoners in 1985. The policy violated the inmates' constitutional rights and broke a 1984 legal agreement in which prison officials pledged to run an integrated facility, Judge Riedlinger ruled.
