Authorities say Melissa might have survived had the tumor been detected earlier, before it grew around her carotid artery. The girl's mother, Jayne Marie Green of Sheridan, had failed to follow through on doctor's orders to take the girl for regular CAT scans after 1985 surgery to remove an earlier tumor, police say. S=NEW STORY Birthday cake stolen before party LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Birthday cakes aren't immune from theft anymore, even in City Hall. Co-workers of Las Cruces City Attorney Robert Kelley bought him a strawberry-flavored yogurt cake for his 42nd birthday Tuesday. They put the cake in a room near the main entrance to City Hall, then went to get Mr. Kelley, said Deputy City Attorney Mark Sims. When they returned, the cake was gone.
