The death of hired killer Brance Munoz was another in a series of blows to Pablo Escobar, in hiding and struggling to hold together his multibillion-dollar drug empire. Munoz, 33, was the head of the cartel's army of assassins, which has killed hundreds of people. He was killed in a 2:30 a.m. gunbattle with dozens of police officers who surrounded his hideout in Medellin, according to the city's police chief, Gen. Jairo Rodriguez. Gen. Rodriguez said police were tipped off that Munoz was hiding in the house in a poor neighborhood. It was not known if the person was seeking the $143,000 reward offered by the Colombian government for information leading to Munoz's capture. Munoz and a brother escaped from prison in 1988 while awaiting trial on murder charges. The brother, Dandenys Munoz, is serving a seven-year prison term in New York. Brance Munoz was charged with murder in the November 1989 bombing of an Avianca airliner, part of a successful war against the Colombian government to get it to stop extraditing cartel members to the United States.
