BELGRADE, Yugoslavia - Former world chess champion Boris Spassky
defeated Bobby Fischer to stave off elimination in the 26th game of their
$5 million replay series yesterday, leaving the American with a 9-5 lead.
The first player to win 10 games will be the winner.  Mr.  Spassky, with
the white pieces, opened yesterday with Queen's pawn and Mr.  Fischer opted
for the Benoni Defense.
