ALLENTOWN, Pa. (AP) - The United Auto Workers and Mack Trucks Inc. have reached a tentative agreement on a new contract for 3,000 employees in four states, including Maryland, union and company officials announced yesterday. Details of the three-year agreement were withheld pending ratification votes Nov. 7-8, UAW Secretary-Treasurer Bill Casstevens and Mack Executive Vice President William C. Craig said in a statement. Bargaining had continued under an hour-by-hour extension of the prior agreement, which expired Tuesday. The agreement covers members of UAW Locals 677 in Allentown and Macungie, Pa.; 171 and 1247 in Hagerstown; 2301 in Severn; 5841 in Winnsboro, S.C.; and 472 in Atlanta. Mack lost $318 million in 1990 and $164 million in 1991, despite a concessionary contract the company had said would save $20 million a year in wages and benefits. Neither side said whether the company wanted more concessions. A news blackout had been imposed on the negotiations at a resort in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. The last contract was reached informally in 1987 between Mr. Casstevens and John B. Curcio, Mack's former chairman, president and chief executive officer. UAW later declared the handshake deal void when an arbitrator refused to recognize the union at Mack's new $87 million assembly plant in Winnsboro. But a federal judge said the deal was valid, and the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear the case in 1989. Renault Vehicules Industriels of France bought Mack in 1990.
