A geologist said it probably dated from the Ice Age. Jack Weber, who owns a well-drilling company, said his son was drilling a well on a ranch in northwest Wyoming recently and had reached a depth of 180 feet when he noticed ice among the chips being blown from the hole. The ice continued coming out as the hole got deeper, and Mr. Weber called David Love, a U.S. Geological Survey geologist, who was able to preserve a few chips before it melted. "You wouldn't believe it unless you saw it," Mr. Love said. "It's weird." Mr. Love said the ice was probably frozen between 10,000 and 50,000 years ago when Jackson Hole was covered by a 2,000-foot-deep glacier. S=NEW STORY 30 persons indicted for staging accidents LOS ANGELES - Thirty persons have been indicted for allegedly staging freeway accidents in an insurance fraud scheme in which one person was killed. The alleged scams relied on organizers who recruited recent immigrants to ride in cars that swerved in front of tractor-trailer rigs and stopped, causing rear-end collisions that were the basis of insurance claims. The indictment announced Friday cites eight accidents allegedly staged between Nov. 25, 1990, and June 17. The alleged ringleader, lawyer Gary P. Miller, 44, of Encino, was indicted on one count of murder and 11 counts of conspiracy and insurance fraud, prosecutors said. He was arrested Friday and was being held without bail. One man was killed during a staged accident June 17 on Interstate 5 in which an 18-wheeler overturned and landed on a car. Investigators said the driver of the car had swerved and braked in front of the truck. S=NEW STORY Accused child molester shot to death TACOMA, Wash. - A former day care operator who had been harassed for years despite his acquittal on child molesting charges was shot to death after answering a knock at his back door. Kaare Sortland, 49, spoke briefly with the gunman before being shot several times in the chest Saturday evening, Sgt. Jim Walker said. Six empty shotgun shells were found on the back porch, and neighbors reported hearing shots and seeing a man running between houses, Sgt. Walker said. Mr. Sortland's wife, Judy, was home at the time but was not hurt. The Sortlands were accused of molesting three boys who attended their Hugs and Kisses Day Center in the 1980s.
