Ayatollah Hassan Sanei's June Fifth Foundation, in a statement, said a reward for killing "The Satanic Verses" author was being increased beyond the previously announced $2 million, plus expenses, because of Mr. Rushdie's recent trip to Germany. No new figure was given in the statement carried by the official Iranian news agency IRNA. Ayatollah Sanei's foundation first offered the bounty in 1989 after Iran's late spiritual leader, the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, demanded that Mr. Rushdie be killed for writing the book. It was deemed blasphemous for its portrayal of the Prophet Mohammed. This article is copyright 1992 The Washington Times.
