Mr. Shepard, 53, suffered a skull fracture. He underwent surgery Tuesday night and was in serious condition, said Ted Braun, spokesman at Santa Monica Hospital Medical Center. A neighbor called police to Mr. Shepard's home in the early afternoon, said Lt. Frank Sebek of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. He said the motive for the beating appeared to be robbery. Mr. Shepard has been a correspondent at the network's Los Angeles office since 1984. He broadcast the first live report of the airstrike on Baghdad at the start of the Persian Gulf war. S=NEW STORY Perot supporter leads police on chase LOS ANGELES - A woman with a Ross Perot campaign poster in her car window led authorities on a 40-minute chase across the city before police rammed the car and arrested her. The woman shouted, "Vote for Ross Perot" as police dragged her from the car Tuesday, police Sgt. Roger Jackson said. Abha Sharma Tyagi, 44, of Torrance was booked for investigation of felony evasion, Officer Mark Warschaw said. There was no indication the woman intended any kind of political protest, and police don't know why she didn't heed officers who tried to stop her, Officer Warschaw said.
