Malibu, which was incorporated as a city last year, turned down the star's application, saying the site was too close to the top of a bluff. But Cher's lawyer, Naomi Norwood, in an interview with the Los Angeles Times Friday, said planning permission had been granted by Los Angeles County before Malibu became a city. Cher's suit seeks to overturn the city's decision not to allow her to build the proposed two-story house. If she is successful, she will number among her neighbors such Hollywood notables as Johnny Carson, Barbra Streisand, Goldie Hawn, Ali McGraw, Carroll O'Connor, Steven Spielberg, Martin Sheen, Dustin Hoffman and Sylvester Stallone. S=NEW STORY Portraits for sale FULTON, Mo. - Fifty autographed portraits of former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev at the college where Winston Churchill gave his "Iron Curtain" speech are for sale for $1,000. The portraits were taken during Mr. Gorbachev's May 6 visit to Westminster College, where Mr. Churchill in 1946 gave the historic address that signaled the beginning of the Cold War. Westminster College spokesman Bruce Hackmann said the 11-by-14-inch black-and-white photos were taken to Moscow in September for Mr. Gorbachev to sign. Proceeds from the sales will go to the college's Winston Churchill Memorial and Library and to the Gorbachev Foundation U.S.A., which Mr. Gorbachev founded to promote his ideas. S=NEW STORY Theater to be sold SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - A bankruptcy judge approved the $4.1 million sale of a debt-swamped, half-finished theater in Branson where Johnny Cash was to be headliner. Mr. Cash's attorney, Bruce McCurry, objected to the sale during Friday's hearing, saying the property on the booming strip in Missouri's Ozarks could have fetched more money. But U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Karen See ruled that the sale was "in the best interest of the estate and should be closed as soon as possible." Mr. Cash wasn't an investor, but was to perform nightly beginning May 1. The developer, David Green of Branson, ran out of money and filed for protection under Chapter 11 of the bankruptcy code. S=NEW STORY Actor arrested WAILUKU, Hawaii - Sasha Mitchell, co-star of ABC-TV's "Step By Step" comedy series, has pleaded not guilty to assaulting his wife during an argument in a hotel lobby. Mr. Mitchell, 25, was arrested Monday night after a dispute in which his wife, Jeannette, suffered minor scratches, the police said. He was charged with abuse of a family member and harassment and released on $250 bond. At Friday's hearing, the actor waived his right to a jury and was ordered to return to Family Court for trial Feb. 5. Mr. Mitchell, who plays Cody on the show that also stars Suzanne Somers and Patrick Duffy, was on Maui to tape an episode. S=NEW STORY Singers expecting child DALLAS - Newlywed singers Paul Simon and Edie Brickell are expecting their first child in January, according to Miss Brickell's father. "We're going to have us a little boy," Eddie Brickell of Mesquite, Texas, said in an interview published in Friday's Dallas Morning News. "I didn't think I'd live long enough to have a grandchild, so I'm really excited." He said the former lead singer of the Dallas band New Bohemians is about seven months pregnant. She married Mr. Simon on May 30 in a private ceremony at his home in Montauk, N.Y. The child will be her first and his second. S=NEW STORY Christmas in Nashville NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Emmylou Harris will be grand marshal of the 40th annual Nashville Christmas parade Dec. 6. "Christmas is always a very special, beautiful time in Nashville, and this is a great way to be a part of it," the singer said in a statement Thursday. Miss Harris' latest album, "At the Ryman," is a collection of country classics. Her solo hits include "Making Believe," "Save the Last Dance for Me" and "Blue Kentucky Girl." The five-time Grammy winner collaborated with Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt on the "Trio" album. S=NEW STORY Fans camp out KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Several hundred Garth Brooks fans did the Texas two-step, snuggled together and sipped hot drinks to stay warm while camped out for a chance to buy tickets to a December concert. Some had been in line since Monday on a concrete parking ramp and promenade at the University of Tennessee, although tickets didn't go on sale until yesterday. Overnight temperatures in the 30s didn't deter true fans. "We love him," said Tammy Varner, who huddled with her mother and brother in a tent. "We wouldn't do this for anybody else, even if Elvis came back from the dead." "If Elvis came back, I'd do it!" interrupted her mother, Yvonne. This article is copyright 1992 The Washington Times.
