But Congress appears in no hurry to do so and opponents say limits are unconstitutional and undemocratic. The U.S. Term Limits coalition backs legislation that would hold senators and representatives to 12 years in office - two six-year terms in the Senate or six two-year stints in the House. Congressional term limits were passed in all 14 states where they were on the ballot, including California, Florida, Ohio and Michigan, in Tuesday's general election. S=NEW STORY Wrongful-death lawsuit cites racial animosity LOS ANGELES - The family of a tow-truck driver shot dead by a police officer in July has filed a lawsuit contending the officer acted out of malice and racial animosity. The wrongful-death lawsuit filed Friday in state court accuses Officer Douglas Iversen of violating John L. Daniels' civil rights. Officer Iversen, a motorcycle officer and a 15-year veteran of the LAPD, shot and killed Mr. Daniels July 1 at a gas station. Officer Iversen told authorities he fired after Mr. Daniels refused an order to stop his truck and began to pull away. Officer Iversen said he feared Mr. Daniels was about to run over pedestrians. Officer Iversen is white, and Mr. Daniels was black. The Police Department, the District Attorney's Office and the FBI are investigating the shooting. S=NEW STORY Eddie Murphy, fiancee parents again - a boy ENGLEWOOD, N.J. - Eddie Murphy and fiancee Nicole Mitchell are the new parents of a 7-pound, 7-ounce baby boy. Miss Mitchell gave birth Saturday morning to Miles Mitchell Murphy at Englewood Hospital, said the actor's publicist, Terrie Williams. "Love's all right," Mr. Murphy said in a statement. Miss Mitchell and Mr. Murphy are expected to wed in March. The baby, their second, was named after jazz trumpeter Miles Davis. Their daughter, Bria, is 3 years old. S=NEW STORY Geraldo and wife have daughter NEW YORK - A daughter has been born to TV talk show host Geraldo Rivera and his wife, C.C. Dyer, who had shared their infertility problems with viewers, their spokesman said yesterday. The 9-pound, 8-ounce baby was born Saturday at a Manhattan hospital. She was named Isabella Holmes, said publicist Jeff Erdel. Mr. Rivera, 49, and Miss Dyer, 36, a producer, had discussed their effort to overcome infertility on the show in 1990. They announced last May that after five years and six operations, they were expecting a child. Both mother and daughter were doing well. Mr. Rivera, in a statement, called himself "the happiest man in America." S=NEW STORY 28 Haitians land on Florida beach HOLLYWOOD, Fla. - Twenty-eight Haitians apparently made it to a Florida beach Saturday in a wooden sailboat and were taken into custody by the Border Patrol, authorities said. "They were basically just standing there on the beach in a crowd," said Coast Guard Petty Officer Toni Long. The Coast Guard didn't know if the Haitians sailed from their impoverished homeland or from another country, Officer Long said. Last month, the Coast Guard returned more than 700 Haitians trying to reach the United States, in accordance with the U.S. government policy of forced repatriation. S=NEW STORY Nation's Christmas tree coming from Minnesota CASS LAKE, Minn. - Somewhere in the Chippewa National Forest, a 62-foot white spruce has about two weeks left to live. The tree will be cut Nov. 23 and shipped to Washington to serve as this year's national Christmas tree. Until then, the local sponsors are trying to keep the location secret, fearing that boughs might be stripped for souvenirs. The honor of producing the national Christmas tree rotates among the 156 national forests. U.S. Forest Service employees nominated 23 trees this year. Paul Pincus, landscape architect for the U.S. Capitol, looked at six before making the final designation in June. The tree will be lighted Dec. 9. S=NEW STORY Plague kills bobcat skinner BILLINGS, Mont. - A hunter who became ill after skinning a plague-infected bobcat has died, a hospital spokeswoman said. Mike Dahl, 34, of Sheridan, Wyo., was exposed to the disease Oct. 31 when he skinned a bobcat shot on the Crow Indian Reservation near the Wyoming border. The plague can be transmitted by fleas or infected animals, said Dr. Ronald Smith, an infectious disease specialist. Health officials believe Mr. Dahl was infected through cuts on his hands. Mr. Dahl's is only the second plague case ever confirmed in Montana and the second plague death in the country this year. Public health officials recommend hunters wear gloves when skinning or handling any game animals and wash their hands afterward. S=NEW STORY Passengers, crew OK after jet crash-lands PHOENIX - A private jet skidded off a runway during landing, crashed through a fence and a wall and caught fire, authorities said. None of the eight people aboard was injured. Investigators found nothing to indicate the brakes on the 10-passenger, 1969 Rockwell Saberliner ever took hold, said Phoenix fire Capt. Kevin Boyle. He said the pilot, Alfred Adams, 54, and the others took off Saturday morning on a day trip to Cleveland. Mr. Adams told rescuers the flight, which included a stop for fuel in Kansas, was uneventful until the Saturday night landing at Sky Harbor International Airport. Mr. Boyle said the plane went through a chain-link fence on the airport perimeter and crossed a main street before knocking down a 4-foot cinderblock wall. S=NEW STORY Fatal police beating protested in Detroit DETROIT - About 150 people rallied downtown yesterday to protest the fatal beating of a man by police officers, and a prosecutor said he was pushing for charges to be brought against the officers. Malice Wayne Green, 35, of Detroit was dragged from his car and beaten Thursday night by two police officers with a flashlight as five other officers watched or took part, Police Chief Stanley Knox said. Wayne County Prosecutor John O'Hair said he expected warrants to be issued against the officers. Mr. Green was black, and the Detroit Free Press reported that six of the officers involved are white and one is black.
