Some witnesses estimated 20 to 30 shots were fired. About 200 people had gathered to greet buses returning Berkner High football players, the drill team and the band from a game at Richardson High School. Richardson won. After shots were fired into the crowd, Berkner High student Sean Patrick Cooper, 17, was fatally shot in the chest when he was forced from his car in the parking lot, officials said. S=NEW STORY Businessman charged in competitor's death FLORENCE, Ala. - The owner of a sporting goods store was arrested after a rampage that left the owner of a competing business dead. David R. Smith, who is going through bankruptcy proceedings, was apprehended Saturday in the parking lot of Russell Sporting Center after Milton Russell was shot, authorities said. After Mr. Russell's slaying, Mr. Smith "apparently returned to the showroom and started firing at customers and other employees," police spokesman Lt. Tony Logan said. Police believe that Mr. Smith then got a rifle from his vehicle and started shooting through the showroom window. Mr. Logan said an employee of the store grabbed a gun from a display and fired a shot through a window of Mr. Smith's Chevrolet Suburban, striking Mr. Smith in his right arm. A witness identified the employee as Mike Russell, the owner's son. This article is copyright 1992 The Washington Times.
