The tally from last week's election was made official Friday. By 96 votes - 2,275 to 2,179 - residents decided to change the city's name to Grover Beach. They hope the change will lure tourists who bypass the city and head for neighboring Pismo Beach, famous for its clams and sand dunes. The San Luis Obispo County towns are about 200 miles northwest of Los Angeles. "We want to make the town a tourist attraction. We're going to make it a nice place to live and a nice place for people to visit," Councilwoman Lowell Forister said. The City Council tried to change the name by ordinance, but opponents concerned about the cost of changing stationery and police badges forced a citywide vote. S=NEW STORY Avalanche kills 2 skiers in park near Anchorage ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Two skiers were killed by an avalanche as they crossed a gully on the way up a mountain near Anchorage. A third skier survived the slide Sunday on Peak Three, a mountain in Chugach State Park. "All of a sudden it hit me and I went over backwards," said Dave Hart, who survived with facial cuts. "It was like being in a washing machine." The bodies of Bruce Hickok and Geoffrey Radford, both 38, were found Sunday night. Both were geologists and experienced climbers who lived near the slope they died on. S=NEW STORY Early-morning fire kills five in Utah SOUTH JORDAN, Utah - Investigators were looking for the cause of a house fire that killed five people, including three teen-agers. The blaze early Sunday killed Heidi Lindsley, 14; 15-year-old sister Marie; 17-year-old brother Todd; their 80-year-old grandmother, Mossi Andersen; and their 50-year-old aunt, Marit Baugarod. The women were visiting from Norway. S=NEW STORY Gunman kills six, then himself MORRO BAY, Calif. - A man known around town as "Crazy Jim" hunted down and killed six persons - apparently in revenge for being evicted from a house and barred from a card club - then shot himself to death. Lynwood Drake III, 43, killed himself Sunday while authorities were talking by phone to a woman he took hostage. The hostage was not seriously hurt. The slayings were "very thought out, very intentional," police Sgt. Greg Beuer said. "He fully intended on killing some people Saturday night and did it in a very methodical way." Drake's anger may have been intensified by the departure of his common-law wife and her infant daughter last month, Sgt. Beuer said. This article is copyright 1992 The Washington Times.
