They said veteran guerrillas from the Shi'ite Muslim Hezbollah (Party of God) and the Sunni Muslim Islamic Tawheed group recently arrived in the former Yugoslav republic, which has been torn by ethnic fighting between Muslims and Serbs since April. "The men were dispatched to help train and organize the Bosnian fighters," a Muslim security source said. "They have left in the past weeks and more might be sent soon." The source said most of the guerrillas reached Yugoslavia by sea from the port of Tripoli, Lebanon, situated 45 miles north of Beirut. Other Muslim sources said more than 50 fighters had left. Asked if the Iranian-trained guerrillas took any weapons with them, the source said, "They only took their expertise." A pro-Iranian political source said the move was "aimed at stressing solidarity among the Muslim peoples. Our brothers in Bosnia are being slaughtered and Europe is merely watching. "We want to make sure that the Bosnians are not left alone, and we will do all in our capacity to help them." Hezbollah guerrillas have been fighting Israel and the Israeli-backed South Lebanese Army, which has its base in the 9-mile-wide security zone Israel created along its border with Lebanon in 1978. Pro-Iranian groups in Lebanon have established a "Committee for the Support of Bosnia's Muslims" and launched a publicity. This article is copyright 1992 The Washington Times.
