The pond is a few hundred yards from the driveway of a home in a rural area west of Champaign where Jeffrey Tanaka was to attend an election-night party last Tuesday. Authorities suspect he mistakenly turned into the wrong driveway and thought the pond, located near a horse stable, was ground water from a heavy rainfall. "It's one of those one-in-a-million freak accidents," said Champaign County Deputy Sheriff Gary Turner. "He was probably trying to turn around or he just drove in." Mr. Tanaka, 34, worked as an associate professor of educational psychology at the university's Champaign-Urbana campus in central Illinois. S=NEW STORY Daley backs gambling bill CHICAGO - Mayor Richard Daley is backing legislation to provide $1 billion in gaming-tax revenue to the state's school districts over 10 years in return for state support of a proposed $2 billion casino complex in the city. "This is a golden goose for Illinois," Mr. Daley said Monday. "The writing's on the wall, and anyone who tells us to slow down and take time is out of touch." But Republican Gov. Jim Edgar remains opposed to land-based casino gambling in Illinois, spokesman Mike Lawrence said. Riverboat casinos are allowed. The matter will be presented to lawmakers next week after they convene for their fall veto session, to be combined with a special session to consider the casino proposal.
