The car in which she was riding went out of control and hit a utility pole in the 7900 block of West Beach Drive in Rock Creek Park about 11:40 p.m. Nov. 8. The car's driver, Gregory L. Thomas, 41, of the 300 block of Tennyson Street NW, was seriously injured in the accident. Miss Hammond was born in the District in 1962. She grew up here and graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School and the University of the District of Columbia, where she earned a degree in mass media and performing arts. She was active in the community and was involved in the 2000 Club/Leadership for the 21st Century, the WHUR Summer Festival, the Studio Cultural Arts Center, the Rosa Parks 77th Birthday Tribute and the American Institute for Foreign Study. She loved to travel and visited Africa, England, Italy, Hong Kong, Korea and the Caribbean. Survivors include her mother, Shirley Waddill Hammond of the District, a retired principal in the D.C. public school system; a grandmother, Valentine Dial Waddill of the District; a brother, Kenneth T. Hammond; and a niece, Courtney Elaine Hammond. A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. today at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Northwest. Interment will be private.
