The plans to kill Svetlana Alliluyeva, Stalin's daughter, are outlined in once-secret historical files of the Soviet KGB secret police and intelligence service, said the officials, who declined to be named. The KGB, which was disbanded after the abortive August 1991 coup, was known to operate an ultrasecret unit within its foreign espionage branch that carried out assassinations of political opponents and KGB defectors abroad. The hits were dubbed "wet affairs" and files of targets were specially marked, according to officials with access to the archives. According to the officials, the Svetlana assassination plan was rejected after high-level discussion among senior KGB officials. The officials declined to elaborate on the reasons for canceling the plan but hinted that the operation could not be carried out without leaving the fingerprints of the secret police. Mrs. Alliluyeva wrote two revealing books about Stalin. Britain's Evening Standard newspaper reported in September that Mrs. Alliluyeva is living in obscurity at a London charity hostel for people with emotional problems. She moved to the home this year and is known there by her married name, Lana Peters. She was married to American architect William Peters for a short time during the 1970s. The couple had a daughter named Olga. This article is copyright 1992 The Washington Times. Redistribution to other sites is not permitted except by arrangement with American Cybercasting Corporation.
