"I probably would introduce an amendment that would have a significant portion of the District of Columbia . . . reunited with Maryland," said Sen. Don Nickles, Oklahoma Republican and chairman of the GOP's policy committee. Many Republicans are opposed to statehood for the District for several reasons, primarily the likelihood that the new state would produce two Democratic senators. The return would require the approval of the Maryland General Assembly, where legislators have expressed concern over the District's fiscal and crime problems. Gov. William Donald Schaefer said he would support the proposal if Washington residents approved it, said Paige Boinest, a spokeswoman for the governor.
