Police said they foiled an Irish Republican Army plot to plant a single bomb that could have caused "untold carnage" in the British capital. The van was seized just before London's spectacular Lord Mayor's Show parade. The IRA did not claim responsibility for the explosives, but the police anti-terrorist branch said it had no doubt that it had foiled an IRA operation "to bring death and destruction to the streets of London." In its guerrilla war to force Britain out of Northern Ireland, the IRA recently has targeted London in a way not seen since the 1970s. There were 16 small explosions around London last month. One man was killed, and more than a dozen were injured. The van was stopped in a routine check yesterday morning, and one of its occupants shot a police officer in a scuffle. Police said one man was arrested and another fled. The van was found to be packed with explosives. This article is copyright 1992 The Washington Times.
