The balcony fell about 20 feet onto a rocky beach, said Lt. Richard Moak of the Los Angeles County sheriff's office. Rescue crews had to free several people trapped in the debris, he said. Four persons were in critical condition, said Gloria Buccola, the county fire supervisor. Sixteen were taken to hospitals with moderate injuries and several others were treated by paramedics, she said. One person was pronounced dead at the scene, she said. S=NEW STORY Investigation widens in millionaire's death VENTURA, Calif. - Prosecutors plan to broaden an investigation into the death of a millionaire rancher who was shot by deputies during a drug raid in which no drugs were found. Ventura County District Attorney Michael D. Bradbury said preliminary findings indicate that the Oct. 2 shooting was justifiable because 61-year-old Donald P. Scott, partially blinded by recent cataract surgery, threatened deputies with a loaded handgun. But Mr. Bradbury said the findings will not be released until he has more thoroughly investigated the scope and purpose of the raid on Mr. Scott's ranch home in the Malibu area. The shooting led to allegations that the raid by about two dozen officers was motivated by a desire to seize Mr. Scott's property, rather than illegal drugs. S=NEW STORY 3 teen-agers held in boy's slaying SAN JOSE, Calif. - An 8-year-old boy, out of school Friday because he had a cold, was killed in his home during an apparent robbery, and three teen-agers who knew the boy were arrested for the crime, police said. Melvin Ancheta suffered at least one stab wound and was slashed on the neck, Sgt. Dennis Luca told reporters Saturday. His body was found Friday afternoon and homicide teams worked through the night to identify suspects. Sgt. Luca said more than 20 people were interviewed, including neighbors who said they saw the three teen-agers going in and out of the boy's house. Sgt. Luca said the three, aged 18, 15 and 16, all from San Jose, were arrested Saturday morning. "They knew the whole family," he said. A police statement said some property taken from the boy's home was found at the home of one suspect. This article is copyright 1992 The Washington Times.
