Several Japanese women have been held in a remote camp in Daesuk-ri, South Hamgyong Province, since the 1970s, according to An Hyuk and Kang Chul-hwan, two inmates who defected to South Korea through China after their escape. "The Japanese women were married to Korean men, and they held a demonstration in the 1970s demanding to go back to Japan," Mr. An said. "There was also another woman whose husband was a political prisoner." In North Korea, political prisoners often are jailed with their entire families. The defectors said the Japanese were more sensitive than the Korean prisoners and often screamed and fainted during public executions.
