The agreement announced yesterday is expected to win approval from the other club owners, ending 3 1/2 months of uncertainty that began last summer when Lurie said he planned to sell a group of Florida investors who wanted to move the Giants to their state. The deal gives Safeway Inc. chairman Peter Magowan control of the Giants as managing general partner. Lurie would retain a $10 million interest as limited partner for four years. The club said it would start the process to hand over day-to-day operations to the new owners immediately, an indication of Lurie's confidence of winning approval for the deal. * The Chicago Cubs decided to give up bidding for 1992 Cy Young Award winner Greg Maddux. General manager Larry Himes said that a $27.5 million, five-year offer Maddux rejected in July still stands - but maybe not for long. Himes said the offer will be withdrawn as soon as he signs someone else. * In New York, sluggers Reggie Jackson and Steve Garvey, and knuckleballing, 300-game winner Phil Niekro head the list of 14 first-time candidates on the annual Hall of Fame ballot. S=NEW STORY Jurisprudence Houston Oilers defensive tackle Doug Smith was arrested on a drunken driving charge after he allegedly was involved in two separate accidents in Houston, police said. Smith was arrested Friday and charged with driving while intoxicated and failure to stop and give information. No injuries were reported in the accidents. Smith was released on $800 bond from the city jail shortly after midnight yesterday, Houston police spokesman Joe Gamino said. Both charges against Smith are Class B misdemeanors punishable by a maximum six-month jail term and a $1,500 fine. * A lawsuit has been filed in connection with a fire at a downtown hotel where the jury was sequestered during the rape trial of boxer Mike Tyson. Indianapolis Athletic Club officials and the family of a guest killed in the fire filed suit Friday against the maker of a refrigerator blamed for starting the blaze. The Feb. 5 fire also killed two Indianapolis firemen who were battling the blaze. In separate lawsuits filed in the Marion County Clerk's county clerk's office, the club and the Thomas R. Mutz family sued the Delfield Co. of Mount Pleasant, Mich. The club is seeking at least $9 million in repair and restoration costs, said club lawyer Danford R. Due. S=NEW STORY Obituary Lou Henson Jr., son of Illinois basketball coach Lou Henson, has died in a single-vehicle auto accident, Illinois State Police said. Trooper William Campbell said Henson, 35, was driving east on Interstate 74 when he lost control near an exit outside Urbana, Ill., late Friday night. Champaign County Coroner Eldon Quick said Henson was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 11 p.m., about an hour after the accident. Quick said Henson died of neck and head injuries. S=NEW STORY Tennis Before turning 25 today, Boris Becker plays Jim Courier in the final of the ATP Tour World Championship in Frankfurt, Germany. Becker survived 23 aces by Goran Ivanisevic to beat the Croatian 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 in yesterday's semifinals.
