That is the clearest indication of how much trouble the Redskins are in from a seemingly never-ending string of injuries. Green broke the radius bone in his right forearm during the first half of the Sept. 13 game against Atlanta at RFK Stadium. The arm was operated on and a steel plate was inserted to help speed his recovery. Still, it was thought Green would be out for at least three months. He was not expected to return until late December, about the time the playoffs start. The cornerback's return was thought to be delayed again two weeks ago when he wound up in bed for a week with an intestinal disorder. However, he practiced last Friday and Saturday, and the coaching staff said he played well. Of course, almost any warm body with four functioning limbs would look good to the coaching staff now. At least two, and possibly three, starters in the defensive backfield are out with injuries this week, so there were few arguments when Green said he wanted to get back in the swing of things. Because the Redskins play tonight, no decision on activating Green has to be made until 4 p.m. today. Mickey Washington, the free agent cornerback signed last week, probably will be waived to make room for Green. If Green is activated off the injured reserve list, coach Joe Gibbs said he would be used sparingly, probably as the nickel back on perhaps a dozen plays. Martin Mayhew, who has been the starter on the left side for three seasons, was put on injured reserve Thursday with an injury almost identical to Green's. Mayhew broke his arm in the first quarter of the Nov. 15 game against Kansas City. He played the rest of the game without telling anyone about the injury, thinking it was only a severe bruise. AJ Johnson, who has been starting in Green's right corner spot, has been playing hurt for three weeks with a painful cyst on the inside of a knee. The cyst was surgically drained, but reappeared. Sidney Johnson, who doubles as the fourth corner and a safety in run-and-shoot situations, went on injured reserve Saturday when his sprained right knee failed to respond quickly enough to treatment. Safety David Gulledge was activated in his place. Alvoid Mays and Johnny Thomas are scheduled to start tonight's game with AJ Johnson and Green the backups, seeing action in nickel situations. Strong safety Danny Copeland has also been ruled out of tonight's game with Todd Bowles starting in his place and Gulledge backing up. Brad Edwards will start at free safety. ***** REDSKINS VS.
