Giants coach Ray Handley ruled Jeff Hostetler out for the Thanksgiving game because of a concussion sustained on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles. Hostetler missed the final quarter and a half of the 47-34 loss to Philadelphia after being hit in the face by Mike Golic while completing a pass to Ed McCaffrey. Hostetler was diagnosed as having a concussion and spent Sunday night at The Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. He was discharged Monday. Graham had thrown six passes this season before getting the call Sunday. He completed 11 of 26 for 141 yards, one touchdown and one interception while leading the team on two scoring drives. LATHON BREAKS LEG Houston Oilers linebacker Lamar Lathon broke a bone in his left leg and will be sidelined at least four weeks, further weakening the Oilers for the Thanksgiving Day game with Detroit. Lathon will be replaced in the starting lineup by Rick Graf. Two other starters, wide receiver Ernest Givins and tackle Don Maggs could miss the game. Givins hurt an ankle in Sunday's 19-16 loss to Miami and Maggs has a bruised thigh. JONES LOVES HOLIDAY PLAY What Tex Schramm and the NFL wrought, Jerry Jones loves and never wants to see the Dallas Cowboys do without. "Thanksgiving wouldn't be Thanksgiving without the Cowboys on national television from Texas Stadium," the Cowboys' owner said. "We want to keep this tradition alive forever if we can." The Cowboys (9-2) host the New York Giants (6-5) on Thanksgiving Day. It will be the 25th anniversary of the Cowboys hosting games on the national holiday. Dallas is 16-7-1 on Thanksgiving with its built-in advantage of staying at home while other teams have to travel in a short work week. Schramm, the former Cowboys general manager, struck a deal with the NFL in 1966 to become a Thanksgiving "host" along with the Detroit Lions, whose history with the game goes back into the 1950s. Dallas is 18-6 with a 9-2 record at home in games played after their Thanksgiving Day contest. CBS CORNERS CLINTON CBS football studio host Greg Gumbel flew to Little Rock, Ark., yesterday to interview President-elect Bill Clinton for the network's pregame show on Thanksgiving Day. CBS said Gumbel would do the interview with Clinton today at the governor's mansion, and it would be telecast during the "NFL Today" show tomorrow, just before the New York Giants-Dallas Cowboys game, which begins at 4 p.m. This article is copyright 1992 The Washington Times.
