Holyfield said he would fight again if he could be guaranteed a paycheck of at least $15 million for a second bout against Bowe. Holyfield lost a unanimous 12-round decision to Bowe in Las Vegas on Nov. 13. Afterward he said he was considering retirement to spend more time with his children. Holyfield said Tuesday he changed his mind about returning after he viewed the tape of the bout with Bowe. "I thought it was a close fight either way," he said. "I thought it was a draw - and in a close fight, they should give the decision to the champion." Holyfield said he believes he won the first four rounds, the ninth round and the 12th. S=NEW STORY Baseball Mark Gubicza returned to the Kansas City Royals yesterday, agreeing to a $1.25 million, one-year contract. Gubicza, a 30-year-old right-hander, is continuing his comeback from rotator cuff surgery two years ago. He was 7-6 with a 3.72 ERA last season. Gubicza, who joined the Royals in 1984, is 104-92. His best season was 1988, when he was 20-8. George Brett and Gubicza are the only players remaining from the Royals' 1985 World Series championship club. * Outfielders Gary Varsho and Cecil Espy agreed to one-year contracts with the Cincinnati Reds. Varsho and Espy were among five players let go last week by the NL East champion Pittsburgh Pirates. The Reds lost outfielders Glenn Braggs and Dave Martinez to free agency. Braggs, who made $1 million last year, has signed with a team in Japan, and Martinez - who made $1.3 million last year - is unsigned. S=NEW STORY Basketball The Phoenix Suns reactivated Jerrod Mustaf and waived forward Alex Stivrins. The 6-foot-10 Mustaf, who played at the University of Maryland, got into 52 games for the Suns last season after they traded Xavier McDaniel to the New York Knicks to get him. He was placed on the injured list Nov. 5 with a bruised right shin. S=NEW STORY Hockey The Winnipeg Jets won their arbitration case against center Alexei Zhamnov when NHL president Gil Stein ruled that the Russian rookie had signed a valid contract. Zhamnov claimed he was deceived by his former agent, Martin Heller, and Jets' general manager Mike Smith when he signed a $1.3-million, three-year contract this spring. After signing Zhamnov, the Jets were forced to pay $2.7 million over three years to another rookie, Teemu Selanne, who took advantage of a new ruling that allowed some European players to enter the NHL as free agents. S=NEW STORY Obituary Hewritt Dixon, the No. 8 rusher and No. 10 pass receiver in Raiders history, died Tuesday night at White Memorial Medical Center in Los Angeles after a long illness. A hospital spokesman said Dixon, 52, had been hospitalized for three weeks. S=NEW STORY Short takes Bobby Rahal, whose consistency helped his own first-year team win the IndyCar championship, was voted 1992 Driver of the Year. "What a year!" Rahal said of the announcement. "After all that's happened, this one is really icing on the cake." The 39-year-old Rahal, who also was the 1986 Driver of the Year, beat out NASCAR stars Davey Allison and Alan Kulwicki. Rahal drew seven of 12 first-place votes and 89 points in the voting by a national panel of motorsports writers and broadcaster. Allison was next with three first-place votes and 65 points, followed by Kulwicki with two first-place votes and 57 points. * Dale Ervine and Andy Schmetzer scored two goals each as the United States beat Argentina 6-3 and advanced to the semifinals of the FIFA World Indoor Soccer Championship in Hong Kong. The United States will play Iran tomorrow in the semifinals. Brazil plays European champion Spain in the other semifinal. * Emilio Sanchez and Sergio Casal of Spain shocked the second-seeded American team of Richey Reneberg and Jim Grabb in three sets in the first round of the ATP Tour World Doubles Championships in Johannesburg, South Africa. It was a bad night for Americans, as the third-seeded team of Kelly Jones and Rick Leach also fell in three sets to sixth-seeded Australians Mark Kratzmann and Wally Masur.
