MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Big East commissioner Mike Tranghese said yesterday that Syracuse quarterback Marvin Graves should have been ejected after a bench-clearing brawl with West Virginia on Oct. 17. However, the league didn't announce any disciplinary action against the officials, and the Orangemen's 20-17 victory will stand. The fourth-quarter fight started after West Virginia defensive back Tommy Orr knocked Graves out of bounds, and Graves responded by throwing the ball at him. Three of West Virginia's key defensive players and one Syracuse reserve offensive lineman were thrown out. Graves later threw the winning touchdown pass against the West Virginia reserve defensive back who replaced one of the ejected players. "Although the four players ejected performed acts that called for ejection, many others deserved the same treatment," Tranghese said. "If there were to be ejections, Syracuse's Marvin Graves needed to be included among those ejected." ACC HONORS Maryland quarterback John Kaleo and wide receiver Marcus Badgett were named last week's ACC co-offensive backs for their performance in the Terps' 27-25 win over Duke on Saturday. Badgett had nine receptions for 218 yards to break school single-season records at Maryland. Kaleo finished the game with 30 completions on 45 attempts for 378 yards and his two touchdowns. North Carolina State center David Inman and middle guard Ricky Logo won player-of-the-week honors as offensive and defensive linemen. Strong safety Bracey Walker and quarterback Mike Thomas of North Carolina took the defensive back and rookie honors. KIRBY FEELS BETTER CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Virginia tailback Terry Kirby said his broken left shoulder blade is healing well, and he believes there's an 85 percent chance he will play against Florida State on Saturday. "That's the way I feel," said Kirby, who was injured Oct. 11 against Clemson. But Virginia coach George Welsh said Kirby first "has to practice for a couple of days, and he has to show he is maneuverable." GRADUATION RATES UP OVERLAND PARK, Kansas - An NCAA study shows the graduation rate of student-athletes at Division I schools rose 8.4 percentage points after Proposition 48 went into effect in 1986. The NCAA report shows the overall graduation rate jumped from 48.1 percent for student-athletes who entered in 1984 or 1985 to 56.5 percent for those who entered school in the fall of 1986. HOWARD PICKED FIFTH GREENSBORO, N.C. - North Carolina A&T got 214 of a possible 288 points when it was voted No. 1 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference preseason basketball poll of conference coaches and sports information directors. Defending tournament champion Howard was picked fifth. This article is copyright 1992 The Washington Times.
