Lipps played in just two games for the Saints before he pulled his right hamstring and was placed on injured reserve. He caught one pass for one yard and returned five punts for a 4.4-yard average in a 16-10 loss to San Francisco and a 13-7 victory over Detroit. A nine-year veteran and twice an all-pro, Lipps was waived early in the season by Pittsburgh after a holdout that kept him out of training camp, the entire preseason and the Steelers' first two regular season games. Lipps also was one of 10 players who filed suit seeking immediate free agency after a Minneapolis jury effectively negated the Plan B system. Lipps, who made $750,000 last year with Pittsburgh, signed a two-year contract with the Saints on Sept. 23. When he signed with New Orleans, Lipps said he felt he could play a few more seasons and was glad it would be in Louisiana. He was born in Reserve, La., and played high school football nearby before his collegiate career at Southern Mississippi. Lipps, 30, could not be reached. Team spokesman Neal Gulkis said he left camp after being told of his release. NAGLE INJURES ARCH Browning Nagle has been introduced to Bruce Smith. Up close and personal. And Nagle has a temporary cast on his left foot to show for it. Nagle was injured in the first quarter of Monday night's 24-20 loss to the Buffalo Bills. The Jets quarterback is listed as questionable for Sunday's game with the Miami Dolphins because of an arch problem. Although Nagle played deep into the fourth quarter, he was hurt when Smith hit him after Nagle released a pass early in the game. "After I threw, he tackled me from behind and just laid on it for a long period of time, it seemed like," Nagle said. "I guess he liked my feet. I was trying to get him off me, off my foot. "I told him, 'The play's over,' and we continued the discussion and that's when my buddy Irv came to my rescue." Jets tackle Irv Eatman dived onto Smith to get him away from Nagle. That drew a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. "I'll take those penalties all day," Nagle said. "I don't think anybody on this team will ever back down and I'm not the exception. Sometimes, you've got to take some lumps, but you can't lay down and let them see you squirm. You have to keep coming back." Nagle wouldn't speculate on his availability for Sunday. BRONCOS CUT HOLMES Veteran defensive end Ron Holmes, whose playing time had di minished this season, was waived by the Denver Broncos. His roster spot was not immediately filled by the Broncos, although wide receiver Michael Young, the team's leading pass catcher a year ago, is eligible to be activated off injured reserve after recuperating from off-season back surgery. Holmes, 29, was playing in his eighth NFL season and fourth with the Broncos. He was acquired from Tampa Bay early in the 1989 season. Holmes started most of his first three years in Denver, and in 1989 he led all Bronco linemen with nine sacks. BROWNER LET GO AGAIN The Tampa Bay Buccaneers released Joey Browner, the second time the former All-Pro safety has been cut this year. Browner, 32, was let go by Minnesota on the first day of camp after coach Dennis Green said he failed his physical because of shoulder problems. "I passed everybody's physical but theirs," said Browner at the time. This article is copyright 1992 The Washington Times.
