EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) - Will the real Miami Dolphins please stand up? After going through the first six weeks of the season as the NFL's only undefeated team, the Dolphins have lost two straight. Even quarterback Dan Marino had few explanations after the Dolphins lost 26-14 yesterday to a patchwork New York Jets team that took a 23-0 halftime lead and stuffed a Miami comeback in the second half. "We were very ineffective in the first half, and it's hard to explain," Marino said. "We're 6-2, but we're not playing well now. We're stopping ourselves. You can see we're not making things happen for ourselves." Ken O'Brien, subbing for the injured Browning Nagle, had touchdown passes of 37 yards to Johnny Mitchell, 20 yards to Rob Moore and four yards to Al Toon for the Jets (2-6), who also had a 47-yard field goal by Cary Blanchard and scored a safety when Marino was sacked in the end zone. O'Brien completed 21 of 29 passes for 240 yards in his second start of the season. Brad Baxter led the Jets with 103 yards on 20 carries. Marino threw touchdown passes of five yards to Keith Jackson and 39 yards to Mark Duper in a 69-second span late in the third period and early in the fourth, but the Jets sacked Marino once and pressured him into incomplete passes twice as they stopped Miami's following drive. Marino completed 14 of 26 passes for 225 yards. The Dolphins, who lost 31-20 to Indianapolis last week, gained only 83 yards on 19 rushes and never seriously threatened the Jets. Mitchell opened the scoring with his first NFL touchdown 6:50 into the game. The tight end, New York's first-round draft pick, took a pass on the left side, broke two tackles and evaded two others to score. The Jets made it 9-0 when Marvin Washington tackled Marino in the end zone for the first time in the quarterback's career. After Miami punted, New York moved 71 yards in 12 plays to make it 16-0 early in the second period. The drive, which featured a 31-yard pass to a leaping Chris Burkett, ended with O'Brien taking his time and picking out Toon in the end zone. While the Jets were moving with ease, Miami's offense - which entered the game ranked fourth in the league - was sputtering. Even when they pulled off a big play, mistakes still plagued the Dolphins. Jackson caught a 42-yard pass from Marino early in the second period, but fumbled when he was hit from behind by James Hasty. The Jets increased their lead to 23-0 when Moore beat Troy Vincent in man-to-man coverage with 21 seconds left in the half to complete a 75-yard drive.
