Rand, the area's top-ranked female bowler in the 1987-88 and 1988-89 seasons, totaled 3,169 (198.06 average) on a four-game series of 815-750-806-798. She earned $650 and a VBQ plaque. Debbie Akers of Christiansburg, Va., closed with consecutive games of 255 but fell 14 pins short at 3,155. She won $325. Local cashers included: No. 4, June Miller of Alexandria (3,113), $225; No. 6, A. Jane Timmons, Alexandria (3,075), $125; No. 7, Kelly Fox, Burke (3,040), $100; No. 8, Susie Ryan, Springfield (3,034), $90; No. 10, Marion Wong, Ashburn, Va. (3,009), $80; No. 11, Linda Turcotte, Manassas (3,008), $75; No. 13, Alison Shurtleff, Springfield (3,006), $65; No. 15, Becky Swales, Hollywood, Md. (2,971), $55; and No. 16, Dawna Taylor, Annandale (2,969), $50. Local bowlers swept the out-of-the-money prizes: * High eight-game total (same day): Trudy Peoples of the District (1,558), $25. * High four-game block (Saturday): Lee Gore, Sterling (843), $20. * High four-game block (Sunday): Bobbie Judy, Woodbridge (811), $20. * High game (Saturday): Lorraine Ferrell, Sterling (267), $15. * High game (Sunday): (tie) Linda Poindexter, Hyattsville, Benita Pyndell, the District (245), $15 each. Hahn to undergo surgery - Mike Hahn of Sterling, considered by many to be the best-ever area player to "compete for the cash," revealed Monday that he will undergo reconstructive surgery on his left knee Nov. 13. He will be sidelined three to six months, after which he has a 60 percent chance of bowling again, doctors said. Hahn, 45, didn't compete during the latter portion of the 1980s. His comeback was temporarily halted earlier this year when he underwent arthroscopic surgery on the same knee. He said that all seemed well until Oct. 11 when he felt extreme pain in the knee after rolling only two games. Told his repaired knee would face less strain if he bowled left-handed, Hahn, whose antagonism toward southpaws is legendary, said, "I'd rather bowl backwards, behind my back, or between my legs than bowl left-handed." Locals cash at Rochester - Tony Walton of the District and Magic Gray of Morningside, Md., cashed at last week's PBA Rochester (N.Y.) Open. Walton, a two-time PBA regional titlist, finished 23rd and took home $1,400. He averaged 210 1/2 for 42 games and went 10-14 in match play. Gray, a former PBA eastern region player of the year, finished 31st and earned $1,040. Jack Bogan of Gaithersburg didn't cash in for the tournament but pocketed $50 in the pro-am. Notes - National amateur champion and 1993 Team USA member Anthony Chapman of Landover, a junior at Maryland, has been invited to participate in the Brunswick Memorial World Open at Deerfield, Ill., which begins Friday. The tournament carries a first-place prize of $33,000, plus a Bayliner boat, motor, and trailer package. . . . With his Rochester Open victory last week, Marc McDowell has taken over the PBA earnings lead with $172,765. Eric Forkel ($157,070) had held the top spot for seven months. . . . Noted instructor Gary "Guru" Parsons of Suitland will feature perspectives of Earl Anthony and Nelson Burton Jr., respectively, in his next two classes at Fair Lanes Waldorf, Annandale Bowl, Alexandria Bowl.
