The Flames were able to force a faceoff in the Quebec zone in the last 40 seconds when Nordiques defenseman Alexei Gusarov iced the puck. With their goaltender pulled for an extra attacker, the Flames won the faceoff, crowded in front of the Quebec net and Roberts banged a rebound of a Stephane Fiset shot. Quebec's Joe Sakic assisted on two goals before scoring himself to put the Nordiques ahead 5-4 at 6:08 of the third period. Trailing 4-3, the Nordiques struck quickly for a power play goal 1:32 into the period. Mats Sundin beat Flames goaltender Jeff Reese from in close after Sakic feathered a pass to him from a few feet inside the blue line. Sakic then scored his 14th goal, wristing a close-range shot beyond Reese after a splendid pass from Andrei Kovalenko, who was about to be checked by Calgary defenseman Al MacInnis.
