The Atlanta Constitution reported that NL president Bill White had fined Sanders $1,000 for the incident and that Sanders had appealed. During the Braves clubhouse celebration of their NL pennant-clinching seventh playoff game victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates, Sanders dumped water on McCarver three times as the CBS analyst was interviewing players after the game. McCarver had criticized Sanders during broadcasts earlier in the playoffs. * The Houston Astros will make a contract offer to St. Louis Cardinals free-agent shortstop Ozzie Smith when the 13-time Gold Glove winner visits the Astrodome tomorrow, Astros general manager Bill Wood said. Smith, 37, hit .295 last year and stole 43 bases. * Dave Bristol, who played, managed and coached for the Cincinnati Reds, is returning as a batting instructor and third-base coach. Bristol managed the Reds from 1966-69. This article is copyright 1992 The Washington Times.
