Hornacek, obtained in the offseason trade that sent Charles Barkley to Phoenix, made 12 of 18 shots, including all three three-pointers he tried, and was 12-for-12 from the free-throw line. He added nine assists, five rebounds and two steals. His previous high was 35 points against Philadelphia last March 13. Boston's only lead was 28-27 on Reggie Lewis' only basket of the first half, with 43 seconds left in the opening quarter. The 76ers led 71-55 at halftime and 93-82 after three quarters, then had to repel a mild threat. Boston closed within six points four times, the last at 104-98 on Dee Brown's jumper with 7:06 left. Hornacek's 18-footer made the score 106-98. Andrew Lang, scoreless to that point, stole the ball. After a timeout, he stretched the lead to 10 points with a dunk. On the next possession, he stripped the ball from Kevin McHale, setting up Hornacek's three-pointer that made it 111-98 with 5:48 to go. Philadelphia led by at least 10 points the rest of the way and ended a five-game Boston Garden losing streak. Armon Gilliam added 22 points, all in the first half, and Hersey Hawkins had 16 for the 76ers. Xavier McDaniel scored 25 for Boston, while Lewis and Brown scored 18 each. Philadelphia took an 11-2 lead before Boston got its first field goal at 3:26. The 76ers took a 32-28 lead into the second period and increased it to 45-40. Hornacek then made consecutive three-pointers, starting a 26-15 surge in the last 7:06 that opened the 16-point halftime lead. After the 76ers took a 83-69 lead, Boston got the next six points and closed to 83-75 with 3:36 left in the third quarter. This article is copyright 1992 The Washington Times.
