Heller \CR THE WASHINGTON TIMES Recent mismatches have marked a Howard-Morgan State football rivalry that goes back to 1889, and the Bison enjoyed the tormentor's role again yesterday as junior quarterback Jay Walker sustained his assault on the school record book. Walker passed for 282 yards and three touchdowns, and freshman fullback Rhadi Ferguson rushed for 113 yards and two TDs as Howard clinched a winning season by pounding the Bears 68-21 at Greene Memorial Stadium. The Bison (6-4, 2-4 MEAC) intercepted a school-record seven passes, three more than all of last season and their previous one-game best, while beating Morgan State for the eighth time in the past nine meetings by an average of 37 points. Walker became the Bison's all-time single-season leader in total offense (2,264 yards), and three touchdown passes in Saturday's finale against Delaware State would tie the school mark of 20. "Howard was known as a running team before I got here," Walker said. "If I break records next year, I'll probably take more pride in them. Records are meant to be broken. I'm just lucky enough to be the one breaking them now." The Bison's interception binge came on a day when Morgan State's quarterbacks threw 53 passes, many after the Bears had fallen hopelessly behind. Their combination of the dive option and run-and-shoot caused few of the problems Howard coach Steve Wilson had fretted about. "The secondary has done the job all year," Wilson said. "Turnovers were the key today." After seven punts in the first quarter, the teams combined for 44 points in the second. Howard had 30 of them for a 33-14 halftime lead, and the Bison were on their way to their worst thrashing of Morgan State since a 62-0 rout in 1987. Sophomore Rupert Grant, a 225-pound fullback from Coolidge High School, carried five times for 40 yards on Howard's first touchdown drive, a 67-yard march. Grant's punishing running culminated in a five-yard scoring burst as the Bison went ahead 10-0. This article is copyright 1992 The Washington Times.
