The NFL probably won't be the one making this historic gesture. Eye guess you all saw last week that the league, in its almighty wisdom, has decided the Dec. 13 Cowboys-Redskins "skirmish" - as dear Morrie Siegel likes to put it - will be a much better game if it is played at 4 p.m. instead of 1 p.m., as originally scheduled. Gee, let me see here. That means since it gets dark around here just after 3 o'clock, this gargantuan tussle will be a night game. That means - and here's where Earl the fan comes in - the 55,000 at RFK Stadium will get the pleasure of freezing their fannies off for the whole game, TV timeouts and all. Get it? December, darkness, frostbite? No, no, the NFL would never have thought of that - just the ratings to be gained. They could've taken the Rams-Cowboys game at Texas Stadium and moved it to 3 p.m. Dallas time. The Cowboys are the hottest team in the league, and it's not cold enough in Texas yet for Dallas fans to mind a late-afternoon start. MAJOR MISCALCULATION Hmmmm. The Nov. 5 Post sports page says, "Among Football Royalty, Majors is King of Tennessee," in a story by Leonard Shapiro about football coach Johnny Majors' empire at the University of Tennessee. Less than two weeks later, we're reading about how Majors' contract has been bought out by unhappy folks at UT. Hmmm. Now Eye don't know about you, but it seems to me that was a pretty dog-gone quick fall from grace for coach Majors. One of those penthouse-to-the-outhouse deals. Makes one wonder if Shapiro visited the right campus, doesn't it? Eye know, Eye know, you think Eye'm being hypercritical. Just because 11 days after Shapiro tells us Majors has a veritable monarchy at UT, the coach is filling out unemployment forms doesn't mean a thing, does it? That's why they say: newspaper today, bird-cage liner tomorrow. King of Tennessee one day, chump the next. POWERFUL GUYS Gotta put in a good word for my buddies over on WRC, the Power Sportstalk boys, Dave George and Tom George. Eye swear, they've probably got a weird brother somewhere named George George. Really, though, sometimes the folks over on The Team! would have you believe sports talk begins and ends with Zero-five-seventy, but it doesn't. The WRC gig, on from noon until 2 p.m. on Sundays, is well worth the ear-time and without a lot of the mindless self-serving blather you hear on The Team! POOF Make him disappear, please. Someone please make Magic go poof! Aren't we tired of his sad tale? Aren't you weary of seeing Magic with Geraldo, Oprah, Phil and Larry? Eye sure am. And how about Mrs. Magic? Don't you know she's hatin' life, listening to her man split hairs with antagonists over exactly how he contracted HIV - assembly-line sex with hundreds of women vs. gay sex? Please, Magic, we simply don't want to know. 9,000 LIVES Is this a great country or what? Eye mean, where else in the universe can a guy like - oh, just pulling a name out of the air, Steve Howe - have recurrent problems with illegal drugs and still make six figures playing the national pastime? Nowhere, of course, except here. Jeepers, Howe's been suspended more times than my father's trousers, and he keeps coming back for more. Major league baseball just can't seem to say no. Eye think the aribitrator just freed Howe from his second or third lifetime ban. What a profound message there is in this. Break the rules, cool your heels, come back later like not a thing has ever happened. And get paid buckets of money, too. Eye guess the guy's going to have to overdose on the mound at Yankee Stadium for someone somewhere to figure out the sports lifestyle, with its euphoria, adoration and big dollars, maybe, just maybe has contributed to Steve Howe's problem. Eye think it's called "enabling." Eye thank you. This article is copyright 1992 The Washington Times.
