Gascoigne scored in the 16th minute and Alan Shearer made it 2-0 in the 28th. Stuart Pearce scored 15 minutes into the second half and Gascoigne added his second goal two minutes later. England (1-0-1) is second in Group Two behind Norway (3-0-1). Turkey (0-1) is in fourth place. Meanwhile in Glasgow, Italy followed a 2-2 tie against Switzerland with another disappointing performance, a scoreless draw with Scotland. Forward Roberto Baggio left with 12 minutes remaining clutching a shoulder after a collision with Alan McLaren. Italy, which already had used its two substitutions, finished a man short. Italy (0-0-2) is second in Group One behind Switzerland. Scotland (0-1-2) is third. S=NEW STORY Baseball In a swap of outfielders, the New York Mets reacquired Darren Reed and sent defensive whiz Pat Howell to the Minnesota Twins. Reed, 27, made his major league debut with the Mets on May 6, 1990, and played 26 games with New York during the 1990 season. The Mets acquired him from the New York Yankees on Dec. 11, 1987, along with catcher Phil Lombardi and pitcher Steve Frey for shortstop Rafael Santana and pitcher Victor Garcia. Howell, 24, hit only .187 in 31 games with the Mets last season. But he made several spectacular catches in center field. * The Colorado Rockies completed their coaching staff with the hiring of former major leaguers Ron Hassey, Amos Otis and Jerry Royster. Hassey, a 13-year major league veteran, will be the Rockies' first-base coach and Royster will be the third-base coach. * The Class A Carolina League has announced a realignment with the addition of the Wilmington (Del.) Blue Rocks, a Kansas City Royals affiliate that will be part of the Northern Division and will join Prince William, Frederick and Lynchburg. The move forces the Salem Buccaneers to shift to the Southern Division, joining Kinston, Winston-Salem and Durham. S=NEW STORY Bowling Hometown favorite Wendy Macpherson took over the lead after three rounds of the $115,000 Bud Light Sam's Town Invitational in Las Vegas. Macpherson has 4,848 pins, good for a 220 average and a two-pin lead over second-round leader Aleta Sill. S=NEW STORY Boxing Roberto Duran, at age 41 still hoping for a shot at a fifth world boxing title, will take on Sammy Matos in a 10-round fight Dec. 17 at Cleveland State University. Duran (87-9) last fought Sept. 30, when he won a 10-round unanimous decision over Tony Biglen in Buffalo, N.Y. Before that, Duran had gone 18 months without a fight while he recovered from a shoulder injury. S=NEW STORY Golf Georgia sophomore Vicki Goetze, the U.S. amateur and NCAA women's golf champion, said she will join the Ladies Professional Golf Association tour next summer. Goetze, 20, will finish her amateur career in the NCAA tournament in May at the University of Georgia course. S=NEW STORY Obituary Ted Garvin, head coach of the Detroit Red Wings for 11 games in 1973, died at St. Joseph Hospital in Sarnia, Ontario after a long illness. He was 72. Garvin gained his reputation in semi-professional hockey as coach of the former Port Huron Flags International Hockey League team. Under his leadership, the team won the Turner Cup in 1971 and 1972. S=NEW STORY Skiing Donna Weinbrecht, Olympic gold medalist in the freestyle moguls event, will miss this season because of an injured right knee, U.S. Ski Team physician Richard Steadman confirmed.
