Thomas Curtis, Samuel Karpf, Frank Pasdeloup, Louis F. Schutte, William V. Thompson and Dr. Henry Timm are the first members elected via the Hall's new pioneer category. Each man played a role in the formation of ABC near the turn of the century but had been overlooked since the Hall was founded in 1941. They will be recognized for nurturing ABC through its stormy early years at Hall of Fame induction ceremonies March 18 on the ABC Tournament lanes in Tulsa, Okla. Anyone who knows someone related to any of the six should contact ABC Hall of Fame board secretary Steve James at 5301 S. 76th St., Greendale, Wis. 53129 or call 414/421-6400. Meanwhile, 1977 Tournament of Champions winner Mike Berlin and 1984 PBA national champion Bob Chamberlain are among the candidates on the 1993 national ballot for the ABC Hall of Fame. The ballot, which was mailed along with a non-professional ballot last week to selected veteran bowling writers, also included the names of PBA titlists Gary Mage, Mike McGrath, Bill Spigner and Tommy Tuttle. To be elected, an individual must receive 70 percent of the votes cast. If no one attains that percentage on the first ballot, a second will be distributed containing the top three vote-getters from the first ballot. Syd Jones Classic - Gary Harris of Occoquan, Va., totaled 1,145 for five games - a 229 average - to capture the $1,000 top prize at last week's Syd Jones Scratch Classic at Ten Pin Coliseum in Richmond, Va. Eric Richardson of Fort Washington finished second with 1,138 and took home $500. Other prize-winners in this tightly bunched field included: Paul Zevgolis of Richmond (1,134), $375; Bobby Hogan of Roanoke, Va. (1,132), $300; Kip Roberts of Richmond (1,126), $250; Mike Whittington and Louis Cornell of Richmond (1,125), $200; Wilson Rowe of Greenbelt and Norris Jeter of Richmond (1,124), $150; Skip Roberts of Richmond (1,120), $120; Michael Tanner of Baltimore (1,108), $100; Bill Nichols of Charlottesville, Va. (1,095), $80; Danny Jones Jr. of Chester, Va. (1,093), $70, and Russell Rose of Fredericksburg, Va. (1,088), $60. High-game winners - Rodney Osborne, Woodbridge (299); Harris (257); Brian Bever, Baltimore (269); Zevgolis (279); and Whittington (269) - each collected $70. Charity Bowl - Bowl America Inc. has announced for the eighth consecutive year that its centers will conduct the Charity Bowl on Dec. 24. The company will donate all receipts collected that day to the charity specified by the bowler. Any non-profit organization under the IRS code may be selected to receive donations, which will include all monies from shoe rentals and refreshments, as well as bowling fees. ABC pilot programs - One of the pilot membership programs that ABC is testing in selected areas allows members to upgrade their regular membership to Lifetime or Eagle. The Lifetime fee is $300 and, in addition to a bowler never having to pay initial ABC or home association dues again, he will receive an ABC watch and an engraved brass membership card. The Eagle category costs $60 annually and includes a special ABC Eagle Member shirt, a "Going for the Gold" video, a subscription to Bowling Magazine and the individual's annual dues, an $82 value. Reports on these programs, as well as one for senior league participants 55 and older - the Gold Card Membership Plan - will be presented at the 1993 ABC convention in Tulsa.
