How come? A: Well, it was just a hell of a bad campaign. If he had contin- ued to campaign after the war in the Persian Gulf, he would have won it, but he quit campaigning. He had a bunch of idiots in the White House advising him, and while he carried Arizona, as every Republican has done since I can't remember when, it was a bad campaign. Q: ... What did he do within the bounds of his campaign that you felt was wrong? A: Well, it got to be sort of a dirty campaign. When you call a man a bozo, what the hell is a bozo? When you fail to talk about the successes of your own campaign and criticize another man for attempts that he's never had the chance to make, it was just - if I ever run a campaign like that, I'd never been elected. Q: ... What does it mean to conservatism overall, do you think? Is this the end to a Reagan revolution? A: Oh, I don't think there was any Reagan revolution. This country is based, its econ- omy is based on free enterprise. The government's based on a con- stitutional democracy. And all Reagan did was to continue what Harry Truman did and George Washington started. Now, I think Clinton, a young man, will do a good job. I think so. I've offered to help him if he thinks an old man like me can help, and we'll just wait and see.
