47,439 Take Postal Retirement Bonus<

A total of 47,439 postal workers took advantage of a six-month
early retirement bonus and decided to leave the Postal Service as
part of the agency's massive reorganization, spokesmen said yes-
terday.

That was well above the 30,000 retirees that Postmaster General
Marvin T. Runyon expected last summer when he announced his plan
to restructure the agency. Friday was the deadline for workers to
resign and take advantage of the retirement bonus.

Officials said yesterday they were unable to say how many re-
tirees had management jobs as opposed to positions covered by
collective bargaining agreements. Last week, when the retirements
totaled 46,651 workers, spokesmen said 33,567 were craft workers
covered by bargaining agreements and 13,084 were managers.

The high number of union workers who took the retirements may
pose a problem for the 30,000 postal workers - many of them in
the Washington area - who lost their jobs in the reorganization.
Runyon has promised not to lay off workers or cut salaries as a
result of the restructuring. But officials have said the workers
who lost their jobs may have to move in order to remain with the
