 TWA

received a bankruptcy court judge's permission to borrow another
$100 million as it tries to keep flying through its reorganiza-
tion.  TWA's unions also agreed to a settlement that would allow
a federal agency to pursue TWA owner Carl Icahn for the $1.2 bil-
lion shortfall in the airline's pension fund. "The door remains
open for Mr. Icahn to offer a settlement," said James B. Lock-
hart, executive director of the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp.<

The Navy

is awarding a $1.1 billion contract to Lockheed Missiles and
Space Co. to produce 39 new Trident II D-5 missiles and related
work on the missile program.<

Two airlines

reported earnings. United's parent, UAL Corp., reported a 14 per-
cent drop in third-quarter profits; and America West, which is
reorganizing in bankruptcy court, lost $70.8 million in the third
quarter, compared with a loss of $85.2 million a year ago. <

FCC Chairman Alfred Sikes

underwent surgery to remove a tumor on his prostate, the FCC
said. Sikes, 52, was expected to recover completely, but will not
return to his office until the end of November, the FCC said. <

Telefonos de Mexico's shares gained sharply as foreign and domes-
tic investors responded to the phone giant's stronger-than-
expected earnings. Telmex reported late Wednesday, after markets
closed, that net income for the first nine months of 1992 rose
11.8 percent. Telmex's American depositary receipts were the most
actively traded stock on the NYSE, closing up $1.75 at $50.37
