The revamped awards show - with fewer trophies, a smaller audience and new management - was set to take place Tuesday night in New York before an industry audience of 500, each paying $175 a ticket. (For more, see special Clio package below.) ABC WINS RATINGS WEEK: ABC won the weekly ratings game on the strength of Monday Night Football. NBC finished second, with original editions of "Secret Service" tied at No. 55 and "I Witness Video," No. 42. CBS was in third place, with "60 Minutes" starting its 25th season at No. 4. Fox's Sunday lineup showed strength with the season premieres of "Married . . . With Children" and "Herman's Head." MONDAY NIGHT LEADS ABC: The season premiere of Monday Night Football helped ABC to a win in the weekly ratings game. The first Monday night game of the season, defending Super Bowl Champs the Washington Redskins vs. Dallas Cowboys, was No. 1 for the week. ABC had six of the top 10 shows for the week, including "Roseanne" at No. 2 and "Coach" at No. 3. New drama "Going To Extremes" is going strong at No.8. HA-LO TAPS DOUG COLLINS: HA-LO Advertising Specialties, a division of HA-LO Industries, Tuesday announced an affiliation with Doug Collins, color analyst for TNT's National Basketball Association games and former coach of the Chicago Bulls. Officials said Collins will be involved in HA-LO's national sales activities. HA-LO is one of the largest advertising specialty firms in the country. SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN DOCUMENTED: The story of the Breck Girls, stars of the nation's longest running advertising campaign, has been made into a television documentary. Such ingenues as 11-year-old Brooke Shields, 17-year-old Cybill Shepherd, and young models Christie Brinkley, Cheryl Tiegs, Jaclyn Smith and Erin Gray all got a jump-start on their careers by appearing as Breck Girls. BRECK GIRLS WERE SUCCESSFUL: For 40 years, the Breck Girls graced the pages of America's leading magazines. Approximately 250 Breck girls were included in the program, which became the nation's longest running advertising campaign, and one of the most successful. Now the story of the Breck Girls is being presented in a half-hour television documentary on Sept. 20 TOBACCO ADS ARE PREVALENT: Tobacco ads are allowed in 21 of 26 major league baseball stadiums, but they constitute 8% of all ballpark ads. Based on a survey by accountants Ernst & Young, that figure puts tobacco in fourth place among all product categories in number of stadium ads -trailing beer, consumer goods and soft drinks. Odd finding: Despite big sales of snack foods at games, they make up only 2% of signs. SPONSORS SALUTE THE KING: More than 20 sponsors are spending more than $225,000 for the marketing hoopla surrounding NASCAR racer Richard Petty's final year of competition. Spinoff products range from "Petty Edition" Grand Prix Pontiacs to R.J. Reynolds giving away music videotapes with cigarette purchases. DEUTSCH GETS COLT CONTRACT: G. Heileman Brewing Co. named Deutsch, New York, to handle creative advertising on the Colt 45 malt liquor account, according to Advertising Age. The account, valued at $8 million, was previusly handled by McNamee, New York. Della Femina keeps creative responsibility for the Old Style and Special Export brands. HILTON OUSTS MCCANN-ERICKSON: Hilton Hotels Corp. Tuesday announced the appointment of Los Angeles-based Dailey & Associates as its new national advertising agency for the Hilton and Conrad brands of hotels. It replaces incumbent agency McCann-Erickson:Los Angeles, which has represented Hilton since 1967. Dailey & Associates is one of the largest agencies based in the West. SPECIAL PACKAGE ON CLIO: CLIOS SURVIVE DEBACLE: The Clio Awards are back from the dead, taking place in New York Tuesday night. In June 1991, then-Clios president Bill Evans filed for bankruptcy-court protection and dropped from sight amid rumors of embezzlement and drug use. Though entry fees and ticket receipts amounted to millions of dollars, the awards ceremony for TV ads was canceled due to lack of money. LAST YEAR EMBARRASSED INDUSTRY: At the radio- and print-ad ceremony, the audience - angry because Evans hadn't shown up with a complete list of winners - stormed the stage and carried off gold Clio statuettes. A photo of the fracas was splashed across the front of Adweek. Advertising executives reacted with fury, embarrassment and dark humor. Since then, Clios President Ruth Ratny has tried to mend fences. AD AGENCIES JUMP IN: She named an all-star advisory board, waived entry fees for agencies that bought tickets to last year's aborted show and delivered 100 Clio statuettes to last year's winners. Although there was some skepticism, Advertising Age estimates 6,000 ads were submitted for the 73 award categories. Some insiders think with some success tonight, the Clios could stick around.
