The advertisers reported they pay more attention to newspaper ads than to ads in the broadcast media, direct mail and cable TV. Also revealed: Newspaper ads generate the most store traffic. NEW MAGAZINE FEATURES CIGARS: Cigar Aficionado is a new magazine which hits the newsstands Thursday. This quarterly is an unabashed celebration of the cigar as a "baton of power," as one wag put it. Indeed, with its thick, glossy paper, and rich brown tones, the design deliberately suggests the leathery seclusion of a men's-only club. Some of the articles are features about other aspects of famous cigar smokers. VANITY FAIR GETS PUBLICITY: Tina Brown's first issue of The New Yorker has hit the stands. And the magazine world has not turned on its axis. Instead, the article that everyone seems to be discussing at the moment appears in her former place of employment: The October Vanity Fair. Skipping over those semi-nudie pix of Madonna, the reader will find a piece about Ross Perot and the collapse of his first campaign. SKY RADIO OFFERS LIVE SPORTS: USA TODAY Sky Radio launched the first live sports radio broadcast for airlines Thursday on a United Airlines jet. SportsRadio, broadcasting 24-hours a day, seven days a week, gives traveling fans live play-by-play action and updates scores every 15 minutes. On nights and weekends, SportsRadio will carry NFL and college football, major league baseball and NCAA basketball. HYUNDAI SHIFTS GEARS: Hyundai will return to a message of value in its new TV campaign, due to begin Oct. 5. This campaign will take over from the 2-year-old theme of "Hyundai. Yes, Hyundai." The new spots were designed by John Noble, a newcomer to the firm of Backer Spielvogel Bates, Irvine, Calif. NEW VENTURE TARGETS OFFICES: Real estate brokers may have a new homeowners magazine with a whopping $12.95 cover price in their offices soon. But it's really free - and a new venture by a couple of entrepreneurs. American Dream Home isn't a typical magazine. Although it's glossy and looks like a magazine, half the articles are timeless pieces and worksheets on how to buy a house and make relocation easier. MAGAZINE BASED ON TIMING: Other magazines cover housing and decorating, but publishers of American Dream Home say it reaches homeowners at the "flash point" of making decisions about carpets, drapes, appliances and other things advertisers would love to sell. Clearly, real estate agents like the idea. The magazine's circulation of 420,000 should jump to 750,000 next year as it goes to more real estate offices. TV TACKLES ROYALTY: The airwaves will be full of royal tribulations Oct. 25 when TV movies about Britain's royal family go head to head on ABC and CBS."Charles and Diana: Unhappily Ever After," airs as "The ABC Sunday Night Movie" at 9 p.m. ET:PT. CBS' "The Women of Windsor" will counter with an all-British cast, a story line that includes Fergie's follies and a one-hour head start. It airs at 8 ET:PT. DAYS INNS TAGS WEATHERMAN: Days Inns of America Inc., has named NBC "Today" show weatherman Willard Scott as official spokesman for the 1,300-unit lodging chain. Scott will be featured in all Days Inn advertisements - print, radio and television and in-property and in-room promotions. Days' officials say Scott represents their concept of American values. L.A. GEAR EXPANDS MARKET: L.A. Gear Inc. has entered into a licensing agreement with Jacques Moret Inc. who will manufacture and distribute a complete line of ladies' and girls' bodywear under the L.A. Gear name. Styles will include athletic, fashion and street funk looks. Exercise tights, leotards unitards and coordinating knit coverups will be specifically geared for athletic and department stores. HELP-WANTED INDEX RISES: The help-wanted advertising index rose slightly Thursday, the Conference Board said. The seasonally adjusted index registered 93 in August, a gain of just two points from July and year-ago figures. Job advertising volume rose in four regions and fell in five. MOTT'S HANDS OVER ACCOUNT: Mott's USA has hired J. Walter Thompson USA, New York, to take over its $12 million fruit and vegetable juice advertising account. Mott's, which is seeking to revive its brand name, is a subsidiary of Cadbury Schweppes. Ally & Gargano previously handled the Mott's account. Advertising Editor: Martin Baucom.
